وكانت العبارة «كي إم بي موتيارا سينتوسا ٢» قد غادرت ميناء تانجونغ بيراك في سورابايا متجهة إلى ماكاسار، قبل أن يبلغ قبطانها عن اندلاع الحريق بعد ساعات من بدء الرحلة.
وأفادت السلطات بأن فرق الإنقاذ شرعت في إجلاء الركاب، من بينهم من اضطر إلى القفز في البحر هربًا من النيران. وحتى ظهر الأحد، لم تصدر أي تأكيدات رسمية بشأن وقوع ضحايا.
وقال نانانغ سيغيت، رئيس مكتب البحث والإنقاذ في سورابايا، إن عددًا من السفن القريبة شارك في عمليات الإنقاذ.
وأوضح أن موقع العبارة يبعد نحو ١٩ ميلًا بحريًا عن جزيرة بوروان سابودي، أقرب نقطة يابسة.
وأشارت أحدث المعطيات إلى أن النيران امتدت إلى معظم أجزاء العبارة، فيما تجمع الركاب الذين بقوا على متنها في جسر القيادة ومقدمة السفينة بانتظار إجلائهم.
وأظهرت مقاطع متداولة عبر وسائل التواصل الاجتماعي تصاعد أعمدة كثيفة من الدخان الأسود من الطوابق العلوية، مع انتشار الحريق في أنحاء العبارة. كما ظهر عدد من الركاب وهم يرتدون سترات النجاة متجمعين على أحد جانبي السفينة. ولم تتمكن وكالة «رويترز» من التحقق من صحة هذه المقاطع بشكل مستقل.
وذكر مكتب البحث والإنقاذ في سورابايا أنه تلقى أول بلاغ عن الحريق عند الساعة ٨:٢٤ صباحًا من مكتب ميناء تانجونغ بيراك.
وبحسب المعلومات الواردة من مشغّل العبارة، أبلغ القبطان عن الحريق بين الساعة السادسة والسابعة صباحًا، قبل أن ينقطع الاتصال بالسفينة.
وأشار سيغيت إلى أن أول سفينة وصلت إلى موقع الحادث، وهي «ميراطوس بروجكت ٣»، لم تتمكن من الاقتراب من العبارة المشتعلة بسبب حمولتها القابلة للاشتعال.

According to Nanang, the ferry was located about 19 nautical miles from Buruan Sapudi Island, the nearest land.
The latest reports indicated that most of the vessel had been engulfed in flames, while passengers who remained aboard had gathered on the bridge and at the bow awaiting evacuation.
Videos circulating on social media appeared to show thick black smoke billowing from the upper decks as flames spread through the ferry. Passengers wearing life jackets could be seen gathered on one side of the vessel. Reuters could not immediately verify the authenticity of the footage.
The Surabaya Search and Rescue Office said it first received notification of the fire at 8:24 a.m. from the Tanjung Perak Harbormaster’s Office.
According to information relayed by the ferry operator, the captain reported the fire between 6:00 a.m. and 7:00 a.m. before communication with the vessel was lost.
Nanang said the first ship to reach the area, Meratus Project 3, was unable to approach the burning ferry because it was carrying flammable cargo.
